Always-On

Standby power consumption in the United States accounts around 400 kW per household per year, equaling up to 5 GW of power annually.
According to the Department of Energy’s report for 2001, your refrigerator uses up to 14% of total household power. Considerably less than older models, technological advances allow us to conserve more power than ever.
But to help keep the cool summer breeze flowing, here are some tips to save energy.

1. Keep frost in the freezer to a minimum -less than a quarter inch. Build-up can block airflow that can put strain on the motor.

2. Make sure doors seals are air tight. Shut a piece of paper in the door and see if it holds. Cool air can escape from faulty seals decreasing efficiency.

3. Keep the freezer set at about five degrees and .the fresh-food compartment around forty degrees Fahrenheit.

4. Keep your fridge stocked, but not overstocked.

5. Clean the coils yearly and keep the fridge from direct contact with the back wall to allow for adequate air circulation.

6. Consider upgrading to an Energy Star model.
